Double Dragon Gaiden will be receiving new updates this year, starting off with a free update that includes Jeff and Abore as playable characters. According to the post on steam we are in for SIX more characters to be added later this year totaling up to eight new characters. Let’s have a look at Jeff and Abore, our first two dlc characters!

JEFF — The Ruthless Rival
Originally featured in the first game as the second boss and consistently making appearances in the series, Jeff for those that don’t know is a rival of Billy and Jimmy and uses a fighting style similar to Sou-Setsu-ken. It was established in the infamous xbox game “Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons” that Jeff was a former friend of the twins before becoming their rival.

Gaiden builds on this with his description and even adds more to his story, now stating him to also be a former student of Sou-Setsu-Ken who’s developed his own style, walking his own path.
A childhood rival of the Lee brothers, Jeff trained alongside them in the martial art Sōsetsuken. But as his skills lagged behind, jealousy grew. Determined to surpass Billy and Jimmy, Jeff abandoned his noble path and embraced the streets, merging Karate with Sōsetsuken to develop a dangerous, unpredictable fighting style.
Could this be influenced by Jeff’s story from the fan game Ultimate Double Dragon? Possibly. Either way, I guess we can say this story beat is now canon to the established lore and that’s always a good thing!

So far Jeff’s fighting style looks to lean heavily on his usage of knives and throwing knives and an unorthodox version of the twins moves like the hurricane kick and his combo string shown here. Interestingly enough his downward chop looks to have been taken from Right Arm, his replacement in certain versions of Double Dragon 2!

You can see above he also has a knife toss special and diving knife attack as a dive kick. Jeff’s been knocked out here, so let’s jump into our next brawler!

ABORE — The Unstoppable Force
This guy may look familiar to you for a number of different reasons, maybe you played Double Dragon 2 and fought him in mission 2 or if you’re a new fan of the River City Ranson series, you’ve seen a few variants of him walking around.
Abore seems to be a bit more popular of the two, at least among the devs of these games. He is a insanely huge brawler, who looks like a certain famous actor, maybe something more than just human? Gaiden’s bio seems to allude to this.
A massive ex-soldier with a stoic demeanor, Abore fights with raw power and unwavering calm. His incredible strength and resilience have led some to wonder: is he a man, or something more? The quiet brawler offers no answers, only crushing blows.

Abore’s fighting style seemingly leans on body hit properties, big area of effect and wide range of crowd control tools. With his huge size it’s very likely he’s another slow, but powerful, heavy hitter!
From what we can see in the trailer he has a giant punch that knocks enemies into each other, an odd table flip motion as a special move that can toss enemies behind him, a double cross chop special and a body splash for his air attack. He also a really cool standing special where energy surges through his body.

Jeff and Abore will be included in an update next month, we’ll keep you updated on the release date once it drops! If you haven’t picked up Double Dragon Gaiden yet, now is the time, the game is on sale on steam and switch and can be found at all the links below!
